Long ago, a big war happened.
It was in a place with many hills. Many people were hurt or lost their homes. It was a very sad time.
New people moved to the land later. Do you think people can be kind to each other?
Long ago, a group called the Dzungars lived on the grass lands.
They were a large group of people. A ruler named the Qianlong Emperor led a big army.
He fought a war against the Dzungars. This war was very sad. Many people died from the fighting. Many others died from a sickness.
Most of the Dzungar people were gone. Later, new people moved to the land to live there. It was a very big change for the area.
The Dzungars were a group of Mongol tribes. They lived on the grasslands of Central Asia. They had a large empire with many laws. They even made their own weapons with gunpowder.
In the mid-1700s, the Qing dynasty fought the Dzungars. The Qing was a large ruling family in China. Their leader was the Qianlong Emperor.
A Dzungar leader named Amursana rebelled against the Qing. This led the Emperor to order the destruction of the Dzungar people.
This was a very sad time. Many Dzungars died from war. Many others died from a sickness called smallpox. Some estimates say 80 percent of the people died.
The Qing troops also killed Kazakh and Kyrgyz people. They could not tell them apart from the Dzungars.
After the war, the land changed. The Qing moved new groups to the area. These included Han, Uyghur, and many other people. They started farms on the old grasslands.
The Dzungar genocide was a very sad event in history. It involved the mass destruction of the Dzungar people. The Dzungars were a group of Oirat Mongol tribes. They lived in a large area of Central Asia. This land stretched from the Great Wall to places like modern Kazakhstan and Siberia.
For a long time, the Dzungars had a very strong empire. They were great at making their own gunpowder weapons. They also had their own laws and many industries. They were the last great nomadic empire in Asia.
This tragedy happened because of a war with the Qing dynasty. The Qing was a powerful ruling group in China. In 1755, a Dzungar leader named Amursana rebelled against the Qing. He wanted to lead a united Dzungar nation. However, the Qianlong Emperor wanted to divide the Dzungar tribes instead. This disagreement led to a very hard conflict.
The Emperor became very angry with the rebellion. He then ordered his troops to destroy the Dzungar people and their name.
Many things caused the Dzungar people to disappear. Warfare was a big part of the loss. However, sickness also played a huge role. A disease called smallpox killed many people during this time. Some scholars say that 80 percent of the Dzungars died. This was between 500,000 and 800,000 people.
One scholar, Wei Yuan, said that 40 percent of households died from smallpox. Another 30 percent were killed by Manchu troops. Many others fled to Russia or to Kazakh tribes.
The fighting also hurt other groups of people. The Qing troops could not tell the difference between Dzungars and other nomads. Because of this, many Kazakhs and Kyrgyz people were also killed. This caused a lot of anger for those groups. It even led to the First Sino-Kazakh War later on.
Some groups, like the Uyghurs, actually helped the Qing. They had been treated poorly by the Dzungar rulers before. This made the Uyghurs want to side with the Qing army.
After the Dzungars were gone, the land changed forever. The Qing government moved new people into the area. They brought in Han, Hui, Uyghur, and Sibe people. They also brought in Manchu soldiers to live there. These new people started many state farms on the grasslands.
This turned much of the steppe into farmland. The area was given a new name, Xinjiang. This history shows how much one war can change a whole region.
The Dzungar genocide was a period of mass extermination targeting the Dzungar people. The Dzungars were a confederation of Oirat Mongol tribes. They formed the last great nomadic empire in Asia. This empire existed from the early 17th century through the mid-18th century. They controlled vast lands stretching from the Great Wall of China to modern Siberia.
The Dzungars were highly advanced for nomadic groups. They manufactured their own gunpowder weapons. They also built a mixed economy of farming and herding. They even created an empire-wide system of laws using the Oirat language.
The conflict began during the Dzungar–Qing War. The Qing dynasty was a powerful empire led by the Manchus. In 1755, the Qing first conquered the Dzungar Khanate. They tried to divide the Dzungar tribes into four smaller groups. A Dzungar leader named Amursana was chosen to lead one group. However, Amursana rejected this plan. He wanted to lead a single, united Dzungar nation. This led him to rebel against the Qing dynasty.
The Qianlong Emperor became enraged by this rebellion. He issued orders to eradicate the entire Dzungar nation and their name.
The extermination was carried out through several methods. The Qianlong Emperor ordered his troops to show no mercy. He told his commanders to target rebels and their followers. The Qing army included Manchu, Han, Salar, and Khalkha Mongol troops. These forces used warfare to destroy the Dzungar population. Disease also played a massive role in the deaths. Smallpox was a major killer during this period.
Some scholars describe this as a complete destruction of a people. It was an explicit policy of extermination that lasted for two years.
The scale of the loss was enormous. Scholars estimate that 70 to 80 percent of the Dzungar population died. This equals roughly 500,000 to 800,000 people. The scholar Wei Yuan recorded specific details about these deaths. He noted that smallpox killed about 40 percent of Dzungar households. Manchu bannermen were responsible for killing about 30 percent of the households. About 20 percent of the people managed to flee to Russia or Kazakh tribes.
The population of the region did not recover for many generations.
Many other groups were caught in the violence. The Qing troops often could not distinguish between different nomadic groups. Because of this, Turkic Kipchak nomads like the Kazakhs and Kyrgyz were also targeted. Many Kazakhs and Kyrgyz died during the genocide. This caused deep and lasting anger toward the Qing. This resentment eventually helped trigger the First Sino-Kazakh War.
The violence against these groups created a point of no return in relations with China.
Some groups actually helped the Qing military. The Uyghur people had been living under Dzungar rule in Altishahr. The Dzungar rulers had imposed heavy taxes on the Uyghurs. Some Uyghur leaders, like Emin Khoja, worked with the Qing. They provided supplies and acted as intermediaries. The Qing used this help to crush the Dzungar state.
However, the Uyghurs did not find lasting peace. Disputes soon broke out because the Qing did not honor promises of autonomy.
The genocide changed the entire landscape of the region. After the Dzungars were gone, the Qing government resettled the area. They moved Han, Hui, Uyghur, Salar, and Sibe people into Dzungaria. They also moved Manchu Bannermen to the region. These people established state farms on the former grasslands.
This process turned much of the steppe into farmland. The Qing gave this new territory the name Xinjiang. This shift moved the region from a nomadic empire to a settled agricultural area.
