Long ago, people used nature for color. They took dyes from plants or insects. For example, they used a plant called madder for red. They also used indigo for blue. In China, people used bark and bugs for color. This happened more than 5,000 years ago.

In 1856, a man named William Perkin made a new way. He made a color called mauveine from coal tar. This was the first man-made dye. Now, we can make many bright colors. These new dyes stay strong when we wash them. They also do not fade in the sun.

There are many ways to dye things. Some people dye yarn in big bundles. This is called package dyeing. Other people dye whole pieces of cloth.

Fiber dyeing, or stock dyeing, happens at the fiber stage before spinning.
