It is located within the eastern central Lowlands. The city sits on the north bank of the Firth of Tay. This estuary eventually feeds into the North Sea. Dundee also forms its own council area known as Dundee City. This area lies within the boundaries of the historic county of Angus.

The name "Dundee" likely comes from two Celtic parts. The first part, "Dun," means a fort. The second part may come from a personal name, Daig. This name derives from a Celtic element meaning fire. In some records, the town is called Dun-Tay. Some people used the Latin phrase "Dei donum." This means "Gift of God," though it was a pun. It had no real connection to the name's true origin.

Dundee's history as a major port began in the late 12th century. King William the Lion gave the area to his brother, David. This charter helped the town grow into a prosperous trading centre. In 1292, the town became a Royal Burgh. This happened during the coronation of John Balliol. The town faced many wars during this era. English forces occupied the town and its castle for several years. Robert the Bruce eventually recaptured the area in 1312. He renewed the town's charters in 1327.

The 19th century brought massive change through the Industrial Revolution. Dundee became the global centre for the jute industry. Jute is a tough fiber used for making fabric. Workers used whale oil to lubricate these dry fibres. This allowed the jute to be processed in large, mechanised mills. This process was much cheaper than using flax. At its peak, the city had 62 jute mills. These mills employed about 50,000 workers. The massive Camperdown Works was once the largest jute works in the world.

This industrial era gave Dundee its famous nickname. It was known as the city of "jute, jam and journalism." Jute came from the massive textile mills. Jam production was pioneered by James Keiller's and Sons. Journalism was driven by publishing firms like DC Thomson.

The city also had a strong shipbuilding industry. At its height, 200 ships were built there every year. One famous ship was the RRS Discovery. This vessel was used by Robert Falcon Scott to explore Antarctica. It is now at Discovery Point.

Dundee has also faced significant challenges and disasters. In 1878, the first Tay Rail Bridge opened.

However, it collapsed during a storm only 18 months later. This tragedy resulted in the loss of 75 lives. The city also experienced a massive fire in 1906. This fire was so large it reportedly sent rivers of burning whisky through the streets. Later, the jute industry declined. It could not compete with newer industries in Calcutta. This led to high levels of unemployment for many years.

Today, Dundee is reinventing itself as a cultural and scientific hub. A £1 billion master plan began in 2001. This project aims to reconnect the city centre to the waterfront. It is expected to take 30 years to finish. A major part of this is the V&A Dundee museum. This is the first V&A branch located outside of London.

The city is also a leader in modern technology. It is a hub for artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. In 2018, it was named the electric vehicle capital of Europe. It also has one of the largest electric vehicle fleets in the country.

The city has a strong reputation for biomedical research. It attracts over £50 million in research funding every year. About 90% of this funding goes to the biomedical area. All local clinical research departments hold the highest 5/5* rating. This makes Dundee an international centre for life sciences.

In 2014, the United Nations named it a UNESCO City of Design. This honours its work in medicine, video games, and comics. The city now uses the slogan "One City, Many Discoveries." This celebrates both its scientific past and its bright future.
