Drawing Hands

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Look closely at this art. It is called Drawing Hands. M. C. Escher made it in 1948. He was an artist from the Netherlands. The art shows two hands on paper. These hands are doing something strange. They are drawing each other into life. One hand draws the other hand. Then the second hand draws the first. This is a paradox. A paradox is a trick of logic. It feels like a loop that never ends. A writer named Douglas Hofstadter calls this a strange loop. Computer experts use this art to teach ideas. They use it to show how computer parts work together. Many other artists have copied this idea. Some use robot hands in their work. They might show a human hand and a robot hand. They draw each other just like the original. It is a famous way to show a loop.
