He was a painter, a sculptor, and a maker of comics. He is most famous for his wood-engravings. These are detailed drawings cut into wooden blocks.

Because he was so fast, he made over 10,000 pictures. He often designed the art, but others helped cut the wood. At his peak, 40 people worked to cut his designs. This helped make his art very popular in many countries.

Doré drew scenes for many famous books. He made art for the Bible and for Dante's Divine Comedy. His drawings for the book Don Quixote were so famous that they changed how people imagined the characters. He also made a large book about London. This book showed parts of the city where people were very poor. Some critics did not like this. They thought he was making things up. Still, his work impressed famous painters like Vincent van Gogh.
