His poems often captured beautiful or quiet moments. People still value his work today because it was so fresh.

Kette had many different ways of writing. He wrote deep poems for adults and fun stories for children. He wrote about 25 stories and poems just for kids. Some of these are called "The Tale of the Dressmaker and the Little Scissors." He also wrote "The Sultan and the Doggy" and "The Bee and the Bumblebee." His children's books are very popular in many lands. They have been translated into German, Czech, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Hungarian.

This shows how much people love his tales.

Kette's life began in a small village named Prem. This village was near the town of Ilirska Bistrica. At that time, the area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father worked as a teacher and a choirmaster. Kette's mother passed away when he was only four years old. He later went to school in Ljubljana and Novo Mesto. In Novo Mesto, he fell in love with Angela Smola. He wrote many poems dedicated to her during his school years.

Kette's path was not always easy. In 1894, his uncle stopped paying for his school. This happened because Kette wrote funny verses about a bishop. After high school, he was sent to Trieste by the army. While in Trieste, he became sick with tuberculosis. He moved back to a small room in Ljubljana near the river. He lived in a place called the Cukrarna flophouse.

Kette died there in 1899 when he was only 23 years old.

Even after he died, Kette's work changed the world of art. Many people in Ljubljana felt great sadness at his funeral. In 1900, a famous editor named Anton Aškerc published Kette's poems. This caused a big argument between old and young writers. The young writers wanted to protect Kette's new style of art. Kette's talent helped many future writers like Srečko Kosovel and Miran Jarc.
