Draco was a famous leader from ancient Athens. He lived in Greece a very long time ago. He was active between 625 and 600 BC. Before him, laws were only spoken out loud. This meant only a few people knew the rules. Draco changed this by creating the first written laws. These rules were part of a new constitution. This made the laws clear for all citizens to see.

Draco used a new way to show the laws. He wrote them on wooden tablets. These tablets were shaped like four-sided pyramids. They were called "kyrbeis." People could perhaps turn them to read every side. These pyramids were kept in public places for many years. This helped people know what the rules were. It stopped leaders from making up their own rules.

We do not know much about Draco's life. Some stories say he died in a strange way. One story says he was in a theater in Aegina. His fans threw many hats and shirts at him. They were so happy that he was smothered. Other scholars wonder if he was even real. The Greek word "drakon" means serpent. Some think the laws belonged to a sacred snake. Most scholars believe he was a real man.

Draco's laws were known for being very harsh. He used the death penalty for many crimes. A person could even face death for stealing a cabbage. His rules also dealt with money and debt. If a person could not pay, they became a slave. He also made a new rule about killing. He told the difference between murder and accidents. This was a very new idea at that time.

His name is still used in our language today. We use the word "draconian" to describe rules. This word means rules that are too strict or cruel. A leader named Solon later changed most of the laws. He kept only the laws about homicide. Even today, Draco is remembered in important places. His image is on the United States Supreme Court Building. He is shown as one of the great lawgivers.
