She is a central figure in the luxury fashion industry. She is best known for her leadership within the Versace brand. This company is famous for blending Italian luxury with pop culture. She also played a major role in the supermodel phenomenon of the 1990s. This era was defined by casting editorial models on the runway. Donatella helped create the specific visual identity known as the Versace look.

Donatella's design process is unique and highly visual. She describes her approach as being rooted in images rather than just garments. She states that she looks through pictures or videos to find inspiration. This method helps her translate visual concepts into wearable art. Her work extends far beyond clothing to include accessories, shoes, and handbags. She has also directed major advertising campaigns. In these roles, she has collaborated with famous photographers like Richard Avedon. Her ability to direct a brand's image has been vital to its global success.

Her career began with deep family roots in the fashion world. She was born in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, in 1955. Her mother, Francesca, was a seamstress who ran a fashion boutique. Donatella studied literature and languages in Florence during the mid-1970s. While studying, she commuted to Milan on weekends to work with her brother, Gianni. In 1976, she and her brother Santo joined Gianni in Milan. The Versace brand was officially established in 1978. At that time, Donatella served as the company's vice president.

Donatella and Gianni worked as close creative partners. In 1982, Donatella won an auction for a palazzo in Milan. This building at Via Gesù 12 became the Versace headquarters and showroom. In 1989, Gianni dedicated the Blonde perfume to her. He also entrusted her with the Versus diffusion line. During 1996 and early 1997, she took over many decisions for the brand. This happened while Gianni was recovering from cancer of the left ear. Following Gianni's death in 1997, she inherited a portion of the brand. She then became its creative director.

Her influence is seen in many famous cultural moments. One famous example is the green "Jungle Dress" designed by Donatella. Jennifer Lopez wore this dress to the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000. This garment became an international sensation. It was so widely searched that it was a reason for the creation of Google Images. The dress was downloaded over 600,000 times within 24 hours. Donatella has also designed for stars like Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. She even designed a Mini Cooper car for the Life Ball.

Donatella has also expanded the brand into luxury hospitality. She designed the Palazzo Versace Australia resort on the Gold Coast. This resort opened in September 2000. She also played a major role in designing the Palazzo Versace Dubai. This second hotel opened in November 2016. Her work demonstrates how a fashion brand can influence architecture and lifestyle. She has received many awards for her contributions to the industry. These include the Fashion Icon of the Year and the International CFDA Award. She has been recognized as Designer of the Year by Glamour multiple times.

Her impact reaches into many different fields of media. Her name and style appear in movies like *Zoolander*. The singer Lady Gaga even wrote a song titled "Donatella" for her album *Artpop*. In the manga *JoJo's Bizarre Adventure*, a character is named after her. After nearly 28 years as CEO, she announced her departure in March 2025. She will remain in the position until the summer. At that time, Dario Vitale will take over the role. Her long career has shaped the modern landscape of luxury fashion.
