He was well known for his bald head and his intense, staring eyes. Throughout his nearly 60-year career, he played more than 250 different roles. He worked on stage, in movies, and on television. Many people loved him for his ability to play many types of characters. He was especially good at playing people who were nervous or unstable. He could be a hero or a villain depending on the story.

His acting involved many different ways of performing. He began his work on the stage in the West End of London. Later, he moved into film and television roles. He often played characters that were quite difficult or scary. For example, he played the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice in 1967. He also played a doctor named Samuel Loomis in the movie Halloween in 1978. This role became very popular and led to many more jobs in thriller films. He even worked with director John Carpenter on several other movies.

Donald's life started in a very different way before he became a star. He was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, to Alice and Thomas Stanley Pleasence. His father worked as a railway station master. Donald went to school in Scunthorpe and later at Ecclesfield Grammar School. At school, a teacher named Mr. Clay helped him find his love for drama. This happened in a group called the Wednesday Club. Even though his father wanted him to choose a different job, Donald stayed dedicated to acting. He even worked as a booking clerk at a railway station for 18 months.

During the Second World War, Donald served in the Royal Air Force.

He worked as an aircraft wireless operator in No. 166 Squadron. He flew almost sixty raids over Europe. On August 31, 1944, his plane was shot down during an attack in France. He was taken to a German prisoner-of-war camp called Stalag Luft I. While he was a prisoner, he acted in plays to entertain the other captives. He was finally released by the Russians ten days before VE day. He finished his military service as a Flight Lieutenant in 1946.

Donald's real-life experiences helped him become an even better actor later on. When he acted in the movie The Great Escape, he gave advice to the director. He helped make the film more accurate because he had actually been a prisoner of war. He was very successful on the Broadway stage in America as well. He won a Drama Desk Award and was nominated for four Tony Awards. In 1994, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. This was a special honor for his many years of service to drama.
