Dalton began his career working on stage. He left school in 1962 to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He also toured with the National Youth Theatre. Later, he joined the ensemble at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He worked in many period dramas, which are stories set in the past. He played Philip II of France in the 1968 film The Lion in Winter. He also played Heathcliff in the 1970 film Wuthering Heights. Other roles included Prince Rupert of the Rhine in the film Cromwell.

He is most famous for playing the secret agent James Bond. He was the fourth actor to play this character in the Eon Productions film series. Dalton starred in The Living Daylights in 1987 and Licence to Kill in 1989. He was offered the role several times before accepting it. He once turned it down because he felt he was too young. He wanted to play Bond in a way that matched the original books by Ian Fleming.

Dalton's version of Bond was different from other actors. He played the character as a darker and more serious person. He wanted the stories to feel gritty and real. He even performed many of his own stunts during action scenes. His first Bond film, The Living Daylights, was a big success at the box office. It earned more money than the two Bond films made before it. However, his second film had a harder time in the United States. This was partly because it came out during a very busy summer season.

Dalton has also stayed busy on television. He appeared in the BBC series Jane Eyre in 1983. He played a character named Rassilon in the sci-fi series Doctor Who. He was also in the horror drama Penny Dreadful. Most recently, he played Donald Whitfield in the western series 1923. He also played Peter Townsend in the fifth season of The Crown. His long career shows he can play many different types of people.
