Clive Dunn was a famous English actor who loved to make people laugh. He was best known for playing very old characters, even when he was actually quite young. His most famous role was Lance Corporal Jones in the TV show Dad's Army. This show ran for nine series and 80 episodes between 1968 and 1977. Although he was only 48 years old, he used makeup to look much older. Because he was younger than many other cast members, he did much of the funny physical comedy.

Acting was a big part of his life from a very early age. He was born in Brixton, south London, to parents who were also actors. After attending Sevenoaks School in Kent, he studied at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London. He had small film roles in the 1930s, such as in Boys Will Be Boys in 1935. Later, he worked in repertory theatre and made his first TV appearance in 1951. He appeared in many shows with famous performers like Tony Hancock and Dora Bryan.

Before he became a star, Clive served in the British Army during the Second World War. In 1940, he joined the 4th Queen's Own Hussars as a trooper. His regiment went to the Middle East and fought in the Greek campaign. In April 1941, his unit was overrun at the Corinth canal. This meant he became a prisoner of war. He was held in Austria for the next four years. He stayed in the army until he was sent home in 1947.

Clive was also a very successful singer. In January 1971, his song "Grandad" became a number one hit in the UK. He performed the song with a children's choir on the show Top of the Pops. This song was written by a musician named Herbie Flowers. The song was so popular that he even released other singles later on. He also played a character named Charlie Quick in a children's show called Grandad from 1979 to 1984.

In his later years, Clive moved to the Algarve in Portugal. He spent thirty years living there and became a talented artist. He loved to paint portraits, landscapes, and seascapes. He continued his art until his eyesight began to fail him. Clive died in Boliqueime, Portugal, in November 2012. His friends and fellow actors remembered him as a wonderful person. They said he was a great joy to work with and always had time for his fans.
