His career grew through many different ways. He started by performing in clubs in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. He also worked as a headline performer in Las Vegas hotels. Rickles was a frequent guest on many famous television talk shows. He appeared over 100 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He also appeared on The Dean Martin Show and The Late Show with David Letterman. He even used his voice to play Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story films. Rickles had an interesting journey to stardom. He was born on May 8, 1926, in Queens, New York. His family spoke Yiddish at home. After high school in 1944, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a seaman first class on a motor torpedo boat tender. He realized people enjoyed his insults more than his prepared jokes.

Many famous people helped his career along the way. While working in Miami, he met the singer Frank Sinatra. Rickles made a funny joke about Sinatra's acting in a movie. Sinatra liked him so much that he called him "bullet-head." Sinatra encouraged other celebrities to watch Rickles perform. This friendship helped Rickles become a star in Las Vegas. He was also part of a group of performers known as the Rat Pack. In 1985, Sinatra even asked for Rickles to perform at a presidential celebration. Rickles said this was the high point of his life.

His work left a lasting mark on entertainment. He appeared in movies like Run Silent, Run Deep and Casino. He also starred in television shows like C.P.O. Sharkey. In 2007, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for a documentary about himself. This film was called Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project. Other comedians honored him at the Apollo Theater in 2014. Many stars like Jerry Seinfeld and Johnny Depp spoke about him. Even though he passed away in 2017, people still remember his funny spirit. He showed the world how to turn a joke into an art form.
