This means he acted in funny scenes instead of just telling jokes. He used his face and body to tell stories. He used facial contortions and different accents to make people laugh. He also used a skill called "double-talk." This is when a person makes sounds that mimic a real language. He would use these sounds to act out funny scenes. He often worked with a team of writers to make these scenes happen.

Sid learned many of his skills from his childhood in New York.

His parents ran a 24-hour restaurant in Yonkers. While waiting on tables, Sid listened to many different people. He learned the rhythms and accents of many different cultures. He practiced this with Italian, Polish, and Russian groups. He even played the saxophone starting when he was only eleven years old. He played in small bands to earn money during the Great Depression. These early years helped him become a great performer.

His time in the military helped him find his path in comedy.

Sid served in the United States Coast Guard starting in 1940. He was stationed in Brooklyn, New York. While he was there, he played in military shows and revues. He met a director named Max Liebman during this time. Liebman saw that people loved Sid's comedy more than the music. This led to Sid doing funny bits between songs in a show called "Tars and Spars." This was his first big job as a real comedian.
