Dolomedes are a group of large spiders.

People call them fishing spiders or raft spiders. Most of them live near water.

These spiders are great hunters. They do not use webs to catch food. Instead, they use the water surface like a web. They sit at the edge of a pool. They stretch out their front legs. They use tiny hairs called trichobothria to feel ripples. These hairs help them sense vibrations. They can tell the difference between a bug and a falling leaf.

When they feel prey, they run fast across the water. They use their front legs to grab the meal. They can eat insects or even small fish.

These spiders have special ways to live in water. They have short, velvety hairs. These hairs are hydrophobic, which means they do not like water. This helps the spider stand on the water's surface. They can also dive under the water. They stay under by trapping a film of air. This air film lets them use their book lungs to breathe. This air also makes them float easily.
