Since its debut in 1963, it has become a massive global cultural phenomenon. The series follows the adventures of a character known as the Doctor. The Doctor is an extraterrestrial being from a humanoid species called Time Lords. This hero travels through space and time to protect various civilizations. The Doctor often uses ingenuity and tools like a sonic screwdriver to solve crises. Usually, the Doctor travels with human companions to explore the universe.

The Doctor travels inside a specialized spaceship called the TARDIS. This name stands for Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space. The ship functions by materializing into and dematerializing out of a time vortex. A unique feature of the TARDIS is its size discrepancy. Its exterior resembles a blue British police box. However, the interior is much larger than the outside suggests. This is due to a malfunctioning chameleon circuit. The circuit was intended to make the ship look like local objects. Because it failed, the ship remains stuck in its police box shape.

A central mechanism of the series is a process called regeneration. This allows the show to change its lead actor while maintaining a continuous story. When a Time Lord is fatally injured or weakened by old age, their cells undergo a change. This process creates a brand new body for the character. While the Doctor retains all previous memories, their personality often shifts. This means each new actor portrays a distinct stage of a single life. Because the show involves time travel, these different incarnations can occasionally meet.

The series was created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber, and Donald Wilson. It first aired on November 23, 1963. The very first broadcast was delayed by eighty seconds due to news coverage of John F. Kennedy's assassination. Originally, the BBC intended the show to be an educational program. It used time travel to explore scientific ideas and historical moments. Early production faced challenges, such as a rejected script about "bug-eyed monsters." However, the Dalek serial became a massive success. This introduced the Daleks, which are the series' most popular monsters.

History shows several distinct eras of production. The original run lasted from 1963 to 1989. After a period of dormancy, the series was relaunched in 2005. This revival moved production to BBC Wales in Cardiff. Since 2023, the show has been co-produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios Productions. The cast has changed many times over the decades. Fourteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. This includes William Hartnell, the first Doctor, and Ncuti Gatwa, the Fifteenth Doctor.
