It tells the adventures of a hero known as the Doctor. The Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. This character travels through space and time in a ship called the TARDIS. The name stands for Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space. The ship looks like a blue British police box on the outside.

However, the TARDIS is much bigger on the inside. The Doctor often travels with human companions to explore Earth and other worlds. Together, they use clever ideas and tools like a sonic screwdriver to solve crises. They work to protect different civilizations from dangerous enemies.

One special way the show works is through a process called regeneration. When a Time Lord is very old or badly injured, their cells change. This creates a brand new body for the character. The Doctor keeps all their old memories during this change. But, their personality often becomes different in the new body.

This clever trick allows different actors to play the same hero. It keeps the story going even when the actor changes. Because of time travel, these different versions of the Doctor can even meet each other. This makes the show a single, continuous story that lasts for many years.

The series was created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber, and Donald Wilson. It first aired on November 23, 1963. The very first episode was delayed by eighty seconds due to news about John F. Kennedy.

Originally, the show was meant to be an educational program for families. It used time travel to explore science and history. In the early days, the show featured famous monsters like the Daleks. These aliens were first introduced in a story called "The Daleks." This specific story helped make the show very popular with many people. It led to a huge boom in many different types of merchandise.

Many different actors have held the role of the Doctor over the decades. William Hartnell was the very first actor to play the part in 1963. Since then, fourteen actors have headlined the series.

Recent actors include Ncuti Gatwa, who played the Fifteenth Doctor from 2023 to 2025. The show had a long first run from 1963 to 1989. It then went dormant for a while before a new series started in 2005. Today, the show is co-produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios in Cardiff.

It has even been part of a deal with Disney for global distribution.

Doctor Who is a huge part of culture around the whole world. It is listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction series.

Many dedicated fans call themselves "Whovians." The show is often parodied or talked about in other television programs. It has created a whole world called the "Whoniverse." This includes books, audio dramas, films, and even spin-off shows. Because it has been around for so long, it has helped train many British TV professionals. It remains a very important part of television history today.
