He has built a career performing in live theater, television series, feature films, and voice acting roles. While he has played many types of characters, he is most famous for his work in the science fiction series Doctor Who. His ability to move between comedy and serious drama has made him a recognizable figure in global pop culture. He has received honors for his work, including a Special Recognition Award at the 2015 National Television Awards.

Tennant's professional journey began with small roles while he was still in secondary school. At age 16, he appeared in an anti-smoking film produced by the Glasgow Health Board for television and schools. After graduating from drama school, he performed with the 7:84 Theatre Company in a play called The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. He also gained early television experience in the Scottish sitcom Rab C Nesbitt, where he played a character named Davina. These early steps allowed him to develop the skills necessary for the larger roles that followed in his career.

To become a professional, Tennant attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He began taking classes there before passing an official audition at age 16. He studied at the institution from age 17 to 20, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dramatic Studies in 1991. During this time, he also had to manage his professional identity. Because another actor was already registered as David McDonald in the Equity union, he adopted the surname Tennant. He chose this name from Neil Tennant, the frontman of the band Pet Shop Boys. He later legally changed his surname to follow the rules of the American Screen Actors Guild.

Much of Tennant's early success came from his work in British theater. He frequently performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, or RSC. His first role with the RSC was playing the jester Touchstone in As You Like It in 1996. He later specialized in comic roles, such as playing Antipholus of Syracuse in The Comedy of Errors. However, he also demonstrated his range by playing serious characters like Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. He has also performed at the Royal National Theatre in London and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in Lobby Hero.

Tennant's most iconic role is the Doctor in the long-running series Doctor Who. He first appeared briefly as the Tenth Doctor in 2005 during a regeneration scene. He then took over the lead role for three full series between 2006 and 2008. His time as the Tenth Doctor concluded in early 2010 after several special episodes. However, his connection to the character did not end there. He returned for the show's 50th anniversary in 2013 and later returned again in 2023. In this later appearance, he portrayed the Fourteenth Doctor during the show's 60th anniversary specials.
