His career spanned more than five decades of professional work. Many people considered him one of the finest actors of his generation. Director David Lynch even described him as the greatest actor in the world. He was particularly famous for having the most distinctive voice in Britain. His ability to transform through voice and character made him a legend in film and television.

Hurt's path to acting was not a direct one. He was born on 22 January 1940, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. His father was a mathematician who became a Church of England clergyman. His mother was a former actress and a draughtsman. As a child, Hurt discovered his passion for performance during a school production of The Blue Bird. Although he faced challenges and doubts from others, he pursued his craft. He initially studied art at Grimsby Art School. To pay for his tuition and living expenses, he sold portraits of friends posing naked. Eventually, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He trained there for two years and graduated in 1962.

His professional career began with roles in films like The Wild and the Willing in 1962. He soon moved into much larger, more significant roles. In 1966, he played Richard Rich in the historical drama A Man for All Seasons.

This film was a major success and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Hurt's ability to play complex characters grew through the 1970s. He won a British Academy Television Award for his role in The Naked Civil Servant in 1975. He also gained fame playing the Roman emperor Caligula in the BBC series I, Claudius in 1976.

Throughout his life, Hurt mastered many different types of performance. He was a skilled dramatic actor in films like Midnight Express, for which he won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. He also performed in intense science fiction films such as Alien in 1979.

This versatility allowed him to work in animation, documentaries, and major motion pictures.

Hurt's roles often required intense physical and emotional work. In the 1980 film The Elephant Man, he played Joseph Merrick.
