DNA is a very important molecule for life. It carries the instructions for how living things grow and work.

These instructions help everything from tiny bacteria to huge animals function. DNA is one of the four major types of macromolecules. These are large molecules that are essential for all known forms of life. Along with proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, DNA helps build and run living things. It is even found in many types of viruses.

DNA works like a twisted ladder called a double helix. The sides of this ladder are called the backbone. This backbone is made of alternating sugar and phosphate groups. The sugar used in DNA is called deoxyribose.

The rungs of the ladder are made of four nucleobases. These are adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. These bases pair up in a very specific way. Adenine always pairs with thymine using two hydrogen bonds.

Cytosine always pairs with guanine using three hydrogen bonds.

This specific pairing is called complementary base pairing.

Scientists have studied these structures for a long time. One famous way to see DNA was through X-ray diffraction. This created a special image known as Photo 51.

This helped researchers understand the shape of the molecule. The two strands of DNA run in opposite directions. This special arrangement is called being antiparallel. This means one end of a strand is a 5' end and the other is a 3' end. These ends are different because of the phosphate and hydroxyl groups.

DNA is found in different places depending on the living thing. In eukaryotic cells, which make up animals and plants, most DNA is in the nucleus.

Some DNA is also found in the mitochondria or chloroplasts. In prokaryotes, like bacteria, the DNA is in the cytoplasm. Their DNA is shaped like a circle instead of long strands.

Inside eukaryotic cells, proteins called histones help pack the DNA tightly. This helps organize the long strands into structures called chromosomes.

DNA is constantly doing important jobs. One big job is replication, which is how DNA copies itself.

When a cell prepares to divide, it makes a complete set of chromosomes. This ensures each new cell has the right instructions. DNA also helps create RNA through a process called transcription.

In this step, the DNA acts as a template. The information in the DNA sequence tells the cell how to build proteins. This is how the instructions in the DNA actually become part of a living thing.
