DNA is a set of instructions for life. It tells living things how to grow and work.

This molecule is made of two long strands. These strands coil around each other. This shape is called a double helix. It looks like a twisted ladder.

Phosphate backbone
Phosphate backbone

The sides of the ladder are the backbone. This backbone is made of sugar and phosphate. The rungs of the ladder are made of four parts. We call these parts nucleobases. There are four types: adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine.

Base pair AT
Base pair AT

These bases follow special rules to pair up. Adenine always pairs with thymine. Cytosine always pairs with guanine. These pairs are held together by hydrogen bonds. These bonds are like tiny magnets that hold the strands together.

DNA is found in many places. In animals and plants, most DNA stays in the nucleus. The nucleus is a small part of a cell.

Some DNA also stays in parts called mitochondria. In bacteria, the DNA is shaped like a circle. It stays in the main part of the cell. DNA can also copy itself. This is how cells make new cells.
