Distilled water

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Distilled water is a very pure type of water. We create it through a method called distillation. This process removes impurities like minerals and other tiny bits.

These impurities stay behind in the original container. This happens because they do not boil as easily as water does. Without this process, minerals can build up as a crust called scale. This scale can cause problems in machines like boilers or engines.

To make distilled water, you must follow a specific way it works. First, you boil the water until it turns into vapor. This vapor is often called steam. The steam rises up and moves into a separate container. Inside that new container, the steam cools down. As it cools, it turns back into liquid water. This new liquid is your pure distilled water.

People have been finding ways to do this for a long time. A man named Alexander of Aphrodisias described it around AD 200. Even older writings by Aristotle mention this way of making water. In 1797, Captain Israel Williams wrote about his own way to distill water. Later, Dr. R. V. Kleinschmidt made a special machine called a compression still. This tool helped ships get fresh water from the salty sea.

Distilled water is very different from the water in your tap. It has very low levels of things like calcium and magnesium. It also has very little sodium, iron, or zinc. In fact, its mineral level is often less than 1 part per million. This makes its electrical conductivity much lower than tap water. Tap water usually has much higher conductivity levels.

We use this pure water in many parts of our lives. It helps steam irons work better by preventing mineral buildup. It is also used in CPAP machines to help people breathe. Some early Boeing 707 airplanes even used it to help engines during takeoff. However, drinking it may not be better than drinking tap water. Tap water has minerals that can help protect your heart.
