Discipline

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Discipline is the skill of self-control. It helps people follow rules and keep working on hard tasks.

Some people think discipline is just punishment. However, there is a big difference between the two. The word discipline actually means "to teach." Punishment is meant to correct or cause pain. While punishment might stop a behavior for a moment, it does not work well for a long time. True discipline focuses on training your mind for the future.

Self-discipline is when you control your own actions to reach a goal.

It means doing what should be done even when it is hard. You might choose to give up a small pleasure now to get a bigger reward later. This is called delayed gratification. To build this, you must take small, steady steps every day. This helps you build strong habits. Perseverance is a key part of this process. It means you keep going even when you face obstacles.

Habits are actions that become automatic over time.

Most habits have three parts: a trigger, a behavior, and a reward. The trigger is the thing that starts the action. The behavior is the action you take. The reward is the benefit you get from it. Research by Phillippa Lally shows it can take about two months to form a new habit. About 40% of what we do is driven by these programmed habits. Once a habit is strong, it helps save your mental energy.

Learning discipline can be done in a few ways.

Sam Thomas Davies suggests three methods. First, you can use self-assessment to find out why you need discipline. Second, you can use self-awareness to notice what distracts you. Third, you can use self-celebration to reward your daily wins. You can also set active goals. These are concrete plans with specific steps. Active goals give you a clear direction to follow.

Many different religions use discipline in their teachings.

In Buddhism, discipline is part of the Noble Eightfold Path. The Qur'an mentions discipline through time management and respecting elders. In some Christian traditions, discipline was used to teach obedience. Discipline also helps with self-control. Self-control is about managing your reactions to things you cannot change. By using discipline, you can build better habits and reach your biggest dreams.
