The disability rights movement is a global effort to help everyone. It is made up of many groups and activists. These people work together to find equal rights for all. They want to make sure everyone has the same chances in life. This includes having safe buildings and easy ways to travel. They also fight for fair jobs and good schools. They want everyone to live without being treated unfairly.

Activists work to break many different kinds of barriers. Some barriers are physical, like buildings with only stairs. Others are societal, which means how people think and act. They also work to break institutional barriers. This helps people live independently in their own communities. For example, many people want to move out of large institutions. They want to live in regular homes and work in real jobs. This helps them be active members of society.

In the United States, the history of this movement has changed a lot. Long ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used a wheelchair. However, he often hid it from the public. This made people think that disability meant weakness. In the 1950s, groups like the March of Dimes began to help. By the 1960s, disability advocates joined the civil rights movement. They worked with women's rights groups to fight for equality. Finally, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990. This law protects people from being treated poorly at work or in public.

Different groups focus on different needs and goals. The autism rights movement views autism as a natural way the brain works. They call this neurodiversity. They want people to accept autistic behaviors instead of trying to cure them. Other advocates focus on mental health and living on their own. People with intellectual disabilities fight for the right to make their own choices. They also use the slogan "People First" to show their value. They work hard to stop the use of unkind words.

This movement is happening all around the world. In Australia, people protested to get better funding for support. They also challenged ideas about what is considered beautiful. In 2013, Australia started the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Canada passed the Accessible Canada Act in 2019 to help with access. India passed a new law in 2016 that recognizes 21 different disabilities. The United Kingdom also has laws to stop discrimination in jobs and schools. All these different efforts help create a fairer world for everyone.
