Diophantus used special symbols to show math ideas. He used Greek letters to stand for numbers. This helped him write equations more quickly. One famous math puzzle is called a Diophantine equation. These are equations where we look for whole number answers. Some people call him the inventor of algebra. His books helped math grow in many lands. In the 9th century, people translated his work into Arabic. Later, his ideas helped math in Europe grow too. A man named Pierre de Fermat owned a copy of the book. Fermat wrote a famous note in the margins. This note became known as Fermat's Last Theorem. Many people still study his work today. His ideas lead to new math called number theory.
