He lived in Baghdad around the year 820. His book was called Al-Jabr. This name gave us the word algebra. It was a very important book for math. It was the first book to teach algebra for its own sake.

Al-Khwarizmi used two main ways to solve problems. The first way was called al-jabr. This means "restoring" or "forcing." It lets you move parts to the other side of an equation. This helps get rid of negative numbers. The second way was called al-muqabala. This means "balancing." It lets you take the same amount from both sides. This keeps the sides equal.

He also wrote about shapes and sizes. He showed how to find area and volume. He even gave three ways to guess the value of pi. One way was 3.1416. His book was very useful for a long time. People used it in European schools until the 1500s. It helped people learn how to solve math puzzles.
