Dino Risi was a celebrated Italian film director. He was a master of a specific genre called commedia all'italiana. This term refers to a style of Italian comedy. He worked alongside other famous masters of this style. These directors included Mario Monicelli, Luigi Comencini, Nanni Loy, and Ettore Scola. Risi helped shape how people understood Italian humor through cinema. His work remains a significant part of film history.

Making a film involves many complex roles. Risi did not begin his career as a director. He first served as an assistant director. He learned the craft by working with cinema figures like Mario Soldati and Alberto Lattuada. This experience allowed him to study how films are built. Later, he moved into directing his own projects. He was known for discovering new talent. He provided early opportunities to famous actors like Sophia Loren and Vittorio Gassman.

His personal life was marked by both academic achievement and early hardship. Risi was born in Milan on December 23, 1916. When he was twelve years old, he became an orphan. Relatives and family friends stepped in to care for him. He later attended the University of Milan. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. His family hoped he would become a psychiatrist. However, Risi chose to follow his interest in cinema instead.

Throughout his career, Risi directed many successful and recognizable films. His 1966 film, Treasure of San Gennaro, was very successful. It was entered into the 5th Moscow International Film Festival. There, the film won a Silver Prize. He also directed the hit film Poor, But Handsome. This movie was so popular that he directed two sequels to it. Other notable works include A Difficult Life and The Easy Life. He also made a film called Scent of a Woman in 1974.

His films often left a lasting impact on global cinema. The 1974 film Scent of a Woman was eventually remade in 1992. That remake was directed by Martin Brest. It featured the actor Al Pacino in the lead role. Risi's ability to tell stories resonated across different decades. His filmography includes dozens of titles spanning many years. These works helped define the era of Italian comedy for audiences around the world.

Recognition for his talent came through many prestigious awards. In 2002, Risi received the Golden Lion – Honorary Award. This honor is known as the Leone d'oro alla carriera. It was presented to him at the Venice Film Festival. This award celebrated his entire lifetime of work in film. Additionally, his films Il giovedì and Il commissario Lo Gatto were featured at a major event. They were shown in a retrospective section on Italian comedy at the 67th Venice International Film Festival.

By the end of his life, Risi had left a massive legacy in the arts. He passed away in Rome on June 7, 2008. He was 91 years old at the time of his death. His influence continued through his family. His two children, Claudio Risi and Marco Risi, both became film directors. This shows how his passion for cinema was passed down to the next generation.
