Dino Risi was a master of Italian film. He helped lead a style called commedia all'italiana. This is a special kind of Italian comedy. He worked alongside other great masters like Mario Monicelli. He also worked with Luigi Comencini, Nanni Loy, and Ettore Scola. These directors were very important to cinema. Risi made people laugh through his storytelling. His work helped define a whole era of movies.

Making movies is a big job with many steps. Risi did not start as a director. He first worked as an assistant director. He learned from people like Mario Soldati and Alberto Lattuada. This helped him learn how to guide a film. Later, he began directing his own stories. He was very good at finding new talent. He gave early roles to future stars like Sophia Loren. He also helped actors like Vittorio Gassman grow.

His life began in Milan, Italy. He was born on December 23, 1916. When he was twelve years old, he became an orphan. Friends and relatives helped take care of him. Risi went to the University of Milan. He studied medicine and surgery there. His family wanted him to be a psychiatrist. However, he chose a different path in art. He followed his passion for the cinema instead.

Many of his films became very famous hits. His 1966 film, Treasure of San Gennaro, won a Silver Prize in Moscow. He directed the hit Poor, But Handsome. He also made two sequels to that movie. Other big films were The Easy Life and A Difficult Life. He made a film called Scent of a Woman in 1974. Many years later, a man named Martin Brest remade it. That version starred Al Pacino in 1992.

In 2002, Risi received a huge honor. He won the Golden Lion for his lifetime work. This happened at the Venice Film Festival. His films Il giovedì and Il commissario Lo Gatto were also shown in Venice. Risi lived a long life of making art. He died in Rome on June 7, 2008. He was 91 years old.
