Digital buffer

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A digital buffer is a special part of an electronic circuit. Its main job is to copy a signal from one place to another. It also acts as a shield to keep the original signal safe. This is important when sending data between different systems. Without a buffer, the next part of the circuit might pull too much power. This could change or ruin the first signal. Buffers are used in many tools like registers and buses.

To understand how it works, think about how electricity moves. A buffer has high input impedance. This means it draws very little current from the first circuit. Because it draws so little, it does not disturb the source signal. The buffer then makes its own output current from its own power. This provides isolation between the source and the next part. This way of working is often called a unity gain buffer.

There are a few different types of these electronic parts. An inverting buffer flips the signal to its opposite state. If the input is high, the output becomes low. This is a basic building block for many digital devices. A non-inverting buffer is different because it does not change the signal. It simply reads the input and sends the same value out. If the input is high, the output stays high.

Some buffers are even more advanced and use two inputs. These are called tri-state digital buffers. One input is for data and the other is a control input. You can think of the control input like a valve. When the control is active, the data flows through. When the control is not active, the output enters a state called high impedance. This state is also known as Hi-Z. In this state, it is as if the part was removed from the circuit.

These buffers are used in many real-world machines. Single input buffers help measure things like the shape of airplane wings. They are also used in strain gauges to check bridges and buildings. Engineers use them to measure temperatures in boilers or high aircraft. Tri-state buffers are very useful for shared buses. A bus is a path that many devices use to send data. Since only one device should use the wires at a time, the Hi-Z state keeps others disconnected.
