Logic gate

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Logic gates are the building blocks of digital technology. They are devices that perform a Boolean function. This is a logical operation done on binary inputs. A binary input can only be one of two states. These states produce a single binary output.

This simple way of working is how machines make decisions. Without these gates, computers could not process any information. They allow machines to follow math and logic rules.

How do these gates actually work? Most modern gates are made from MOSFETs. A MOSFET is a type of transistor that acts as a switch. When the switch is on, it allows electricity to flow. When it is off, the flow stops.

You can also build gates using diodes or vacuum tubes. Some older systems even used mechanical gears or fluid.

By connecting many gates in a chain, we create logic circuits. These circuits can perform much harder jobs than a single gate. They can build memory or even a whole processor.

People have studied the math behind these gates for a long time. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz refined the binary number system in 1705. He showed that binary could combine arithmetic and logic. Later, Charles Babbage designed a machine in 1837. His analytical engine used mechanical gates made of gears.

In 1886, Charles Sanders Peirce wrote about using electrical switches for logic. These early ideas paved the way for the digital age we live in today.

Many scientists helped make modern electronic gates possible. Walther Bothe created the first modern electronic AND gate in 1924. Between 1934 and 1936, Akira Nakashima, Claude Shannon, and Victor Shestakov studied switching circuits. They showed how Boolean algebra describes these circuits.

In 1963, Chih-Tang Sah and Frank Wanlass created CMOS logic. This was a big step for making gates more efficient. Today, a single microprocessor can contain more than 100 million logic gates.

Logic gates are everywhere in our modern lives. They are the reason your phone and computer work. Every time you play a game, gates are working. They handle the math needed to show images on a screen.

They also manage the memory that stores your files. Even simple machines use the logic of these tiny switches. It is amazing how small parts can build such huge systems.
