The Dies irae is a famous Latin poem from the Middle Ages.

It is known as a sequence, which is a special type of song used in religious services. The title means "Day of Wrath." This poem describes the Last Judgment, a time when a judge comes from heaven. It tells of a loud trumpet that calls all souls to stand before God.

The poem says a book will show every deed a person has done. It describes a scene where some people are saved and others face eternal flames. This powerful imagery has made the poem a very important part of history.

For centuries, this poem played a big role in the Roman Catholic Church. It was used during the Requiem Mass, which is a special service for the dead.

In the 1962 Roman Missal, the poem held a very important place. However, changes happened after the Second Vatican Council in the late 1960s. A group called the Consilium helped create new rules for church services. They decided to remove the sequence from the standard funeral Mass. Today, it is still used as a hymn on All Souls' Day. It can also be sung during the last week before Advent.

No one knows exactly who wrote the poem. Some people believe it was written by Thomas of Celano in the 1200s. Others think Latino Malabranca Orsini might be the author. Some very old traditions even say it came from much earlier figures. These include St. Gregory the Great or Bernard of Clairvaux. One real piece of evidence is a manuscript from Naples. This book dates between 1253 and 1255. We know this because it does not mention Clare of Assisi, who was named a saint in 1255.

Music has kept the Dies irae alive for hundreds of years. The first music for these words was a Gregorian chant. This is a simple, somber style of singing. Many famous composers used this melody in their own works. For example, Mozart and Verdi included it in their famous Requiem pieces. Other composers like Berlioz, Britten, and Stravinsky also used it. Even the composer Giovanni Battista Martini wrote many small songs based on the poem. It is one of the most quoted melodies in all of music history.

The poem has also traveled into books and other art. The writer Walter Scott used its lines in his poem from 1805. The famous playwright Goethe included it in his play, Faust. Even the horror story The Phantom of the Opera features the chant. It has also inspired science fiction books by Philip K. Dick. Writers often use the poem to create a sense of wonder or fear. Whether in a church or a novel, the Dies irae remains a strong symbol of the big questions people ask about life.
