Diego Columbus was a prominent navigator and explorer during the Age of Discovery. He served the kings of Castile and Aragón in several high-ranking roles. He held the titles of 2nd admiral of the Indies and 2nd viceroy of the Indies. He was also the 4th governor of the Indies.

Born in Porto Santo, Portugal, around 1479 or 1480, he was the only child of Christopher Columbus. Much of his life was dedicated to a single mission. He wanted to regain the titles and privileges that had been granted to his father. These rights had been denied to his father in the year 1500.

Diego's path to power involved both education and strategic connections. He served as a page at the Spanish court in 1492. Later, he and his half-brother Fernando served as pages to Queen Isabella in 1497. His education was guided by prominent Franciscans at the monastery of La Rabida. His social standing was greatly increased through his marriage to María de Toledo y Rojas. She was the niece of the 2nd Duke of Alba and a cousin to King Ferdinand. This royal connection provided him with essential political support.

In August 1508, Diego was officially named Governor of the Indies. He arrived in Santo Domingo in July 1509 to begin his rule. During his time there, he built a grand residence called the Alcázar de Colón.

This building still stands today in the Dominican Republic. In 1511, a royal council confirmed much of his authority. They declared that Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Cuba were under his power by right of his father. However, the council excluded Uraba and Veragua from his control. They also stated that his titles of viceroy and admiral were hereditary, though they were honorific.

Diego's governance was marked by constant political struggle. A faction formed between those loyal to him and the royal officials of King Ferdinand. These tensions grew so strong that Ferdinand recalled Diego to Spain in 1514. Diego spent the next five years in Spain attempting to press his legal claims. He was finally successful in 1520 when his powers were restored by King Charles. He returned to Santo Domingo on November 12, 1520, to resume his duties.

His return coincided with periods of significant unrest and conflict. He arrived during a native revolt near the Cumana River. This area was a site for Spanish slave raids and the pearl trade. Diego responded by sending Gonzalo de Ocampo on a punitive expedition. This force included 200 men and 6 ships. In 1521, he also invested in an enterprise by Bartolomé de las Casas to settle the Cumana area. When this settlement failed, the king blamed Diego and lost confidence in his leadership.

Serious social conflicts also occurred under his administration. On December 26, 1522, the first major slave rebellion in the Americas took place in Santo Domingo. This revolt was started by enslaved Jolof laborers working on Diego's sugar plantation. Many of the insurgents escaped into the mountainous interior. There, they established independent maroon communities among the surviving Taíno people. The rebellion ended with many rebels being captured and hanged by the admiral.

Diego Columbus died in Spain on February 23, 1526. His death left a complicated legacy regarding his family's status. In 1536, a compromise was reached for his son, Luis Colón de Toledo. Luis was named Admiral of the Indies and received a perpetual annuity of 10,000 ducats. He also received the island of Jamaica as a fief and the title of Duke of Veragua.

Despite this, his descendants continued to dispute the rents, offices, and titles in the New World for many years.
