Diego was born in Portugal around 1479. He spent much of his life working for Spanish kings. He wanted to keep the titles his father once held. His marriage to Maria de Toledo helped him reach his goals. Maria was a relative of King Ferdinand.

In 1508, Diego became the Governor of the Indies. He moved to Santo Domingo in 1509. He built a grand home there. We call this home the Alcázar de Colón.

Life was not always easy for Diego. He had many fights with royal officials. He lost his power for five years. Later, King Charles gave his power back in 1520.

During this time, there were many hard events. Enslaved people fought for their freedom on his sugar farm. This was one of the first large revolts in the Americas. Diego also faced revolts from native people. He died in Spain in 1526. His family continued to fight for their rights for many years.
