Dick Fosbury was a famous American high jumper.

He changed how the sport is played. Most jumpers used the straddle method back then. This meant they jumped over the bar facing down. Fosbury found this way very hard to do. He began to try new ways to jump.

He started to jump backward over the bar. He ran in a curved, J-shaped path. Then he leaped head-first and arched his back.

This new way was called the Fosbury Flop. It worked well because of soft foam mats. These mats let him land on his back safely.

Fosbury won a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics. He even set a new Olympic record. People were surprised by his style at first. But his way helped him jump much higher. Soon, almost every jumper used his method. By 1980, most Olympic finalists used the Flop. He is a true legend of track and field.
