It lived between 290 and 272 million years ago. It was one of the first big animals to live fully on land. It was also one of the first to eat only plants.

Its name means "crosswise-biter." This is because of its unique teeth. It had eight peg-like teeth in the front. These teeth helped it nip off bits of plants. Its back teeth were wide and blunt. These worked like molars to grind up food.

Diadectes also had a partial secondary palate. This is a part of the mouth that let it chew and breathe at the same time.

This animal was built very strongly. It had a thick skull and heavy ribs. Its ribs stuck out to the sides. These parts helped it carry its big body on land.

Some young Diadectes were hunted by other animals. Scientists found tooth marks on their bones. These marks came from predators like Dimetrodon.
