It also possessed a well-preserved vestibule, three semicircular canals, and a developed cochlear recess.

We first learned about this animal through the work of Edward Drinker Cope. He was an American paleontologist who named and described Diadectes in 1878. Cope based his description on a partial lower jaw found in the Permian of Texas. He named one species "sideropelicus," which means "of iron clay." This name referred to the Wichita beds in Texas where the fossils were located.

Cope was the first to suggest that the animal was probably herbivorous. Many fossils of Diadectes have since been found across North America, especially in the Texas Red Beds.

History also shows a rivalry in the naming of these animals. Othniel Charles Marsh published the name "Nothodon" just five days before Cope published "Diadectes." In 1912, the scientist Case treated Diadectes as the senior synonym. This means he decided Diadectes was the correct name to use. While this might violate some formal rules of zoology, it has been followed by many paleontologists. Recent studies also look at how different species relate to one another. For example, a 2024 paper formally named the genus Kuwavaatakdectes for a specific species.

Even though Diadectes were large, they were not always safe from danger. A juvenile skeleton was discovered with tooth markings on its limb bones. This evidence shows that they were preyed upon by other species. These predators included animals like Varanops, Dimetrodon, or the amphibian Acheloma. This tells us a lot about how the food chain worked in the Permian period. It shows that even the first large land herbivores had to deal with hunters. This interaction was a key part of the ecosystem they lived in.
