Deserts are very dry places. It is hard to grow food there. People must find ways to bring water to plants. This is called irrigation.

Humans have farmed in deserts for a long time. Ancient Egypt grew crops near the Nile River. In the Negev desert, people used clever ways to catch rain. They built dams and stone piles to move water. They even grew grapes for wine.

Native American tribes also farmed in dry lands. Some used a way called Ak-Chin farming. They planted crops near seasonal floods. This let the water flow over their plants. In Arizona, the Hohokam people built many long canals. They did this without metal tools or wheels.

Today, we use new tools to save water. One way is drip irrigation. It lets water drip slowly to the roots. This helps plants grow with less water.

In Israel, farmers reuse wastewater for their crops. They also use desalination. This is a way to turn salt water into fresh water. In the Imperial Valley, farmers grow many vegetables. These help feed people in the United States during winter.
