Demoiselle crane

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The demoiselle crane is a tall, graceful bird. It is the smallest of all cranes. This bird has a long white stripe on its neck. It also has black feathers on its chest. These cranes have a loud call. It sounds like a trumpet. They also like to dance. Their dance looks like ballet.

These birds move to different lands each year. This way of moving is called migration. Some cranes fly to Africa for the winter. Other cranes fly to India. In India, they form large flocks on farm lands. At night, they sleep in shallow water.

Demoiselle cranes build simple nests on the ground. They lay two eggs in the spring. Both the mother and father help keep the eggs warm. We call this sitting on the eggs incubation. The babies hatch in about 28 days. Both parents feed the young chicks. These birds start to have their own babies when they are two years old.

In India, people call this bird the koonj. People think the bird is very beautiful. They say its thin shape is graceful. Ancient stories say the bird inspired the first poems.
