It starts in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Two branches rise there. These are the East Branch and the West Branch. They meet at a place called Hancock. From there, the river flows south. It forms borders for New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

The river is special because it is free-flowing. This means there are no dams on its main path. It flows into the Delaware Bay at the end. Many people rely on this water. It provides drinking water for 17 million people. Half of New York City gets its water from the river.

Long ago, the Lenape people lived along the banks. They had their own names for the river. Later, the river was named after Thomas West. He was an English nobleman.
