Long ago, many groups lived in the area we call Delaware. The Lenape and Assateague tribes lived there first. In 1638, Swedish settlers made the first permanent homes. They built log cabins at a place called Fort Christina. These settlers included people from Sweden, Finland, and Germany.

Later, the land changed hands many times. The Dutch took control in 1655. Then, the English took over in 1664. During this time, some people were treated very unfairly. An English leader named Robert Carr mistreated many settlers. Some people were even sold into slavery.

In 1682, a man named William Penn gained control of the land. He was a Quaker. At first, Delaware was part of Pennsylvania. But the people wanted to rule themselves. In 1701, they got their own group of leaders. This group was called a legislature.

Many new people arrived by ship. Many came from Ireland. They used ports like New Castle to enter the land. In 1776, the people voted to be free from Great Britain. They helped form the United States of America.
