Long ago, many people lived in Delaware. The Lenape and Assateague tribes lived there first. Later, people from far away came by ship. Swedes built the first permanent homes. They even brought log cabins to the land.

Many different groups lived in the area. Some were Dutch and some were English. This made the land a mix of many cultures.

One leader named William Penn owned the land. He helped the people have their own leaders.

Later, the people chose to be free. They joined with other lands to form the United States. Delaware is now a special state.
