Most of the stories published by the company take place in a fictional setting called the DC Universe. This universe is home to many culturally iconic characters and famous superhero teams. These characters and stories have become significant parts of global pop culture. The company remains one of the oldest and largest comic book publishers in the United States.

The stories within the DC Universe rely on a vast cast of heroes, villains, and teams. Iconic heroes include Superman, who is considered an enduring superhero, and Batman, a widely recognized global icon.

Wonder Woman serves as a famous symbol of feminine power. Characters often work together in groups like the Justice League, which is described as the most famous superhero team. Other notable teams include the Teen Titans and the Legion of Super-Heroes. The company also features famous villains such as Lex Luthor, the Joker, and the cosmic figure Darkseid.

Some characters, like Catwoman, are known as antiheroes.

DC also publishes material that exists outside of its main superhero universe. The company uses special imprints to release different types of stories. These include the Vertigo imprint and the DC Black Label. These labels allow the publisher to offer a variety of narratives that do not follow the standard DC Universe rules. This variety helps the company reach different types of readers and explores different genres of storytelling.

The history of the company began with entrepreneur Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson.

In 1935, he founded National Allied Publications. His first publication was New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine. Unlike many previous series, this book featured original stories rather than reprints from newspaper strips. By 1936, the group became Nicholson Publishing. Later, a partnership with Harry Donenfeld led to the formation of Detective Comics, Inc. in 1937. This new company eventually absorbed the remains of the original National Allied company.

A major turning point occurred in June 1938 with the publication of Action Comics #1.

This issue introduced Superman, a character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman's origin story revealed he came from a planet called Krypton. This release helped start the "Golden Age" of comic books. Shortly after, in March 1939, Batman made his debut in Detective Comics #27.

Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Batman was a masked vigilante wearing a caped suit. These early issues are now among the most valuable comic books in existence.

As the company grew, it established many specific details that define its characters. For example, Batman's world includes Gotham City, Wayne Manor, and tools like the Batarang and utility belt.

Superman's stories often feature the city of Metropolis and the Daily Planet newspaper. The company also introduced many supporting characters, such as Lois Lane and James Gordon. These details, along with the introduction of famous supervillains like the Ultra-Humanite, helped build a complex and lasting world for readers to explore.

Today, DC Comics holds a significant position in the publishing industry. In 2017, DC and its competitor Marvel Comics shared approximately 70% of the American comic book market. As of 2025, DC is the second largest publisher in the comic book shop market, following Marvel. In the bookstore market, DC is also the second largest, though it follows Viz Media. The company moved its headquarters from Manhattan to Burbank, California, in 2015. DC continues to be a central figure in the world of graphic storytelling.
