He is known for sharing highly unusual views about the universe and human history. Before his career as a writer, he was a professional athlete and a media personality. His life has transitioned from the world of sports to the study of complex, often controversial, theories. Today, he has written over 20 books. He has also spoken in more than 25 different countries.

Icke's early life was marked by financial struggle in Leicester, England. He grew up in a council estate and often felt the pressure of poverty. This motivated him to pursue a career in professional football. He became a goalkeeper and played for several teams. He played for Coventry City's youth team and later for Hereford United. However, his athletic career ended at age 21. He suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that causes painful swelling in the joints. This illness forced him to retire from the sport.

Following his retirement from football, Icke entered the world of journalism. He worked as a reporter for various newspapers, such as the Leicester Advertiser. He eventually moved into sports broadcasting with the BBC. He became a household name as a presenter on programs like Grandstand and Breakfast Time. He even worked at the 1988 Summer Olympics. His career at the BBC ended in 1990. This happened because he publicly opposed the Community Charge, a local tax. The BBC chose to distance itself from him to remain impartial.

During the 1980s, Icke began exploring alternative medicine to manage his arthritis. This interest led him toward New Age philosophies and Green politics. He joined the Green Party and became a national spokesperson quickly. However, his path changed significantly after meeting a psychic named Betty Shine. In 1990, Shine told him he had a special purpose on Earth. She claimed he would receive messages from the spirit world.

This encounter shifted his focus toward spiritual and metaphysical ideas.

In 1991, Icke visited a pre-Inca burial site in Sillustani, Peru. While standing in a circle of stones, he experienced a powerful physical sensation. He described it as his kundalini, or energy centers, being activated. This event began what he called his "turquoise period." During this time, he began to claim he was a "Son of the Godhead." He also began wearing turquoise clothing to connect with positive energy.

These experiences formed the foundation of his modern worldview.

Icke's central theory involves the existence of inter-dimensional beings. He claims that a race of reptilian beings, called Archons or Anunnaki, has hijacked Earth. He argues these beings are shape-shifters. He believes a hybrid race known as the "Babylonian Brotherhood" or the "elite" manipulates human events. According to Icke, these groups use fear to control humanity. He suggests they feed off the resulting "negative energy." He believes the only way to stop this is through love and awareness.

Icke's work has faced intense criticism regarding its content and impact. Many critics describe him as an antisemite and a Holocaust denier. They point to his endorsement of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which is a known fabrication. He has also been criticized for identifying the Rothschild family as reptilians. Some argue his theories serve as a code for Jewish people. Icke has denied these accusations. Because of his promotion of misinformation, several countries have banned him from entering.
