Equiano's early life was interrupted by a sudden kidnapping. When he was about eleven years old, he and his sister were taken from their home. They were separated and sold to slave traders. After six or seven months, he reached the coast. He was placed on a European slave ship with 244 other enslaved Africans. They traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados in the British West Indies. He was eventually sold in the Colony of Virginia.

In Virginia, Equiano was purchased by Michael Henry Pascal. Pascal was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He gave the boy the name Gustavus Vassa. This name honored a 16th-century King of Sweden. Equiano had already been given two other names by previous owners. He tried to insist on the name Jacob. This refusal resulted in him receiving many cuffs. He eventually submitted to the name Gustavus Vassa for official records.

Equiano gained many skills while serving Pascal. He accompanied Pascal to England and traveled during the Seven Years' War. He witnessed several military events, including the Siege of Louisbourg in 1758. He also saw the Battle of Lagos in 1759 and the Capture of Belle Île in 1761. Equiano was trained in seamanship to assist ship crews. During battles, his specific duty was to haul gunpowder to the gun decks. He was also baptized into the Church of England in 1759.

In 1762, Equiano was sold to Captain James Doran. He was transported to Montserrat in the Leeward Islands. There, he was sold to Robert King. King was an American Quaker merchant from Philadelphia. King allowed Equiano to engage in profitable trading for his own account. Equiano sold items like glass tumblers and fruit between Georgia and the Caribbean. In 1765, King promised Equiano could buy his freedom for 40 pounds. Equiano achieved his freedom in 1766.
