David A. Johnston was a scientist who studied volcanoes. He worked for the United States Geological Survey. This group is called the USGS. He was a volcanologist, which means he studied how volcanoes work.

David liked to study the gases that volcanoes let out. He believed these gases could help predict an eruption.

In 1980, David watched Mount St. Helens in Washington state. The mountain began to change. A large bulge grew on its north side. This happened because hot rock moved under the ground.

David stayed at a post to watch the mountain closely. On the morning of May 18, the volcano erupted. David was the first to report it. He sent a message to a nearby city. Sadly, the eruption took his life.

People remember him for his hard work. Two observatories are named after him today. One is named the Johnston Ridge Observatory.
