Dangerous goods are substances that can cause harm. They might hurt people's health or safety. They can also damage property or the environment. These items are often called hazardous materials, or hazmat for short.

This includes things like toxic or poisonous liquids. Some goods are also radioactive or can catch fire easily. Even compressed gases or very hot materials are dangerous. Keeping these items safe is a very big job.

To stay safe, we use special signs and rules. Many signs are shaped like diamonds.

Colors on these diamonds tell us the specific risk. Red means the item is flammable and can burn. Orange means it is explosive. Green is used for non-flammable and non-toxic gases.

We also use packing groups to choose the right containers. Group I is for items with great danger. These need the most protective packaging. Group III is for items with minor danger.

Many groups work together to make rules for these goods. The United Nations helps set the main rules for everyone.

These rules help move goods by plane, ship, or train. For example, the International Maritime Organization makes rules for the sea. The International Air Transport Association makes rules for flying. Even the way we move goods by rail has special rules. These rules help different countries follow the same safety steps.

For example, gasoline is known as UN 1203. Lithium ion batteries are known as UN 3480. These numbers help workers know exactly what is inside a box. This is very important during an accident or a spill. It helps special hazmat teams know how to help.

Rules for these materials help keep our whole world clean. The international community has special goals for the year 2030.

One goal is to reduce deaths from hazardous chemicals. Another goal is to make water and soil cleaner. We can do this by managing waste more carefully. By following these rules, we protect our air and water. This helps keep the planet healthy for everyone.
