Rice had many ways to make people smile. He began his career in 1841. At first, he showed a pig named Sybil. This pig could supposedly tell time! Later, he performed plays based on the works of William Shakespeare. He did these plays with songs and different ways of speaking. He did not just tell jokes like other clowns. He mixed funny moments with serious thoughts and songs. He also helped create a style of show that led to vaudeville. This was a new way of performing for many people.

His journey in the circus started a long time ago. His uncle was a ringmaster for the Howes and Turner circus. This circus started in Salem, New York, in 1826. Rice said this was the first American circus to use a canvas top. He traveled with this circus for several years as a young boy. Later, he worked with the circus of Gilbert R. Spalding from 1847 to 1848. Eventually, Rice began producing his own big shows. He often had more than one tour running at the same time.

Rice left behind many famous words and phrases. He helped start the phrase "jump on the bandwagon." He did this while helping Zachary Taylor run for president. He also turned a mean comment into a success. Other performers called his work a "one horse show" to tease him. He proved them wrong by putting on a great show. An Arkansas paper even called his show "The Greatest Show on Earth." Another phrase, "Hey, Rube!" started in 1848 in New Orleans. A member of his group yelled this to a friend during a fight.

Many famous people knew about Dan Rice. The writer Mark Twain wrote about him in a book. Twain likely saw Rice perform when he was a boy in Hannibal. Rice was also a model for the character Uncle Sam. Even though he was very famous, he died with very little money in 1900. He is buried in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Today, the town of Girard, Pennsylvania, remembers him. They hold a three-day festival called "Dan Rice Days" to honor him.
