These peaks are the highest in Hokkaidō, Japan. They sit around a wide caldera. A caldera is a large, bowl-shaped hole in the ground. This group is very important to the land. It even gives its name to the Daisetsuzan National Park.

The mountains are part of a larger area called the Daisetsu-Tokachi graben.

This volcanic area shows its power in many ways. You can see steam rising from the earth. These openings are called fumaroles. There are also many natural hot springs in the area.

The group sits on the Kurile arc. This arc is part of the Ring of Fire. This is a place where much volcanic activity happens. The earth here is active and full of energy.

The local Ainu people have special names for these mountains. They call the group Nutapukaushipe. This name means "the mountain above the river."

Other names include Nutaku Kamushipe or Optateske. These names connect the people to the land. The mountains have been part of this place for a long time. They are a key part of the local history.

Many different kinds of peaks make up this group. Some are stratovolcanoes, which are tall, cone-shaped mountains.

Others are lava domes, which are mounds made of thick lava. Some peaks form the rim of the large caldera. The group includes many specific heights and types. There are lava domes and volcanic caldera rims. Some are listed as stratovolcanoes or lava domes.

You can think of these mountains as a giant puzzle. Each peak is a different piece of the landscape.

Some pieces are tall cones and some are rounded domes. Together, they form the high points of Hokkaidō. The wide caldera sits in the middle of them. It is a massive feature of the natural world. This group is a wonder of nature in Japan.
