Large numbers of megalithic burials, known as dolmens, have also been found in the region. In ancient times, the area was part of the proto-kingdom Jinhan. Historical records refer to the area as a walled-town polity called Dalgubeol. The Silla Kingdom eventually absorbed this territory by the fifth century.

Daegu's historical importance grew through various Korean dynasties. In 689, King Sinmun of Silla considered moving the capital from Gyeongju to Daegu. Although the move failed due to resistance from political elites, the city remained vital. It received its current name in 757. During the Joseon period, Daegu served as the administrative capital of Gyeongsang Province.

However, Daegu remained in South Korean hands as part of the Pusan Perimeter. This period was known as the Battle of Taegu. Following the war, the city experienced explosive growth. The population increased more than tenfold in the second half of the 20th century. In 1980, Daegu separated from Gyeongsangbuk-do to become a directly governed city. It was later redesignated as a metropolitan city in 1995.
