He is often called the "Father of the Nation" because he helped his country gain self-rule. He was born on October 20, 1884, in a village called Botale. His family was quite successful in business. His father, Don Spater Senanayake, made money from graphite mining and plantations.

Young Stephen went to a school called S. Thomas' College in Mutwal. He was not always a studious student, but he loved sports. He was very good at playing cricket. He even played for the Sinhalese Sports Club and the Nondescripts Cricket Club.

After school, Senanayake began a career in business and government. He worked as a clerk for a short time. Then, he joined his brother, D. C. Senanayake, to run their family businesses. He helped manage family estates and a graphite mine. He even helped introduce rubber as a new crop to the family farms. In 1914, he traveled to Madagascar to study how they mined graphite.

This work gave him many new ideas. He was also a member of the Colombo Town Guard during World War I. These early years prepared him for a life of leadership.

Senanayake's path to leadership included some very difficult times. In 1912, he and his brothers joined a movement called the temperance movement. During the riots in 1915, the brothers were arrested by British authorities. They were held in Welikada Prison for 46 days without any charges.

He held many important jobs in the government over many years. In 1924, he was elected to the Legislative Council from Negombo. In 1931, he was elected to the State Council of Ceylon.
