He was born into a royal family in Russia. He later gave up his princely title. As a young man, he loved writing poems.

Mirsky lived in many places. He fought in a big war. After that, he moved to Great Britain. He taught at the University of London. He wrote a very important book about Russian stories. Many people thought it was the best book ever written on that subject.

Mirsky also helped share English books in Russia. In 1932, he went back to his home country. He wanted to live there again. But things became very unsafe. In 1937, he was arrested. The leaders thought he was a spy. This happened after he had lunch with an English friend.

Mirsky was sent to a work camp.
